Many different cultures have played a sport similar to the modern game of soccer but no one can really say  when or where soccer began, but what is known is that the earlier variations of what later became soccer were played almost 3000 years ago.

One of the earliest forms of soccer in which players kicked a ball around on a small field has been traced as far back to 1004 B.C. in Japan. The Munich Ethnological musuem in Germany has Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C.. that mentions games very similiar to soccer that were played between teams from Japan and China. The Chinese kicked a leather ball filled with hair, and that soccer was played in 611 A.D. in the then Japanese capital, Kyoto.

With the 2010 World cup in South Africa many fans are rooting for their national teams as the World cup near opening match approaches. Soccer is the most watched single sport event in the World even more watched than the Olympics, Soccer is bigger than baseball, football and basketball combined.

As i was doing the research for this article i also found out that the World cup is no stranger to  the sex trade, the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where Brothels and sex work is legalized has , brought  in approximately 40,000 sex workers.

South Africa's Central Drug Central Authority  has also estimated that 40,000 sex workers will come to Johannesburg for the 2010 World Cup, from as far as Russia, the Congo and Nigeria to cater to the wide "tastes" of some 400,000, mostly male, visitors and their "needs".

In POOR Magazine we have comrades from Africa's Shackdwellers Union that told us their story of how poor people have been being displaced, removed and evicted out of their shacks in preparation for the World Cup so that tourists would not see the poverty in South Africa.

I am not surprised that oppressed people are used as sex workers or are swept under the rug, this is typical, but as much as i love Soccer I am against all these unjustices.
